Meets with HIST 6230. Focuses on political, economic, and intellectual debates and conflicts characterizing and shaping Russia in the 1920s. Examines historical literature and historiography on the period as well as art, architecture, literature, and film. Explores the creative energy of the revolutionary period to understand why and how relative tolerance in the 1920s gave way to reaction in the 1930s.
